Assisted Hatching
Assisted Hatching
This procedure is used in certain circumstancess where the outer shell of the embryo—the zona pellucida—becomes hardened in culture, thereby restricting the ability of the embryo to implant in the lining of the womb. Assisted Hatching involves placing a small hole in the zona pellucida to make it easier for the embryo to implant.
The risk of the embryo splitting in two resulting in twins is slightly higher following this procedure.
